Why fish here

The Missoula area covers a lot of ground for guided fishing. The Blackfoot River is the water that put this area on the map — it's the river from A River Runs Through It — and it's still one of the best places anywhere to learn fly fishing or spin fishing with a guide. The Bitterroot and the Clark Fork are two more excellent rivers nearby, good for wading or floating. Rock Creek, a smaller stream close to Missoula, is one of Montana's official Blue Ribbon trout streams, known for its healthy population of wild trout.

If lakes are more your speed, Flathead Lake is a giant — the state record lake trout caught there weighed over 42 pounds, and it's common to land fish over 20 pounds, along with hefty mountain whitefish. It also has year-round trolling charters, including guided trips through the winter. Closer to Missoula, Salmon Lake and Seeley Lake are known for a great mix of trout and hard-fighting northern pike, and Georgetown Lake is a solid pick for guided ice fishing.

However you like to fish, there's likely a guide nearby who does it well.

Picking the right guide

Not all guides are the same, and the right one depends on what you're after. Some specialize in a relaxed, beginner-friendly float. Others run hard-charging trips built for experienced anglers chasing trophy fish. Some only fish rivers; others run boats on Flathead Lake or take clients out on the ice in winter. Before you book, it helps to know: what kind of fishing you want to do, how experienced you (or your group) are, and what time of year you're going — since not every guide runs trips year-round.
